The Annual Summit on English Language Acquisition, Office of English Language Acquisition, U.S. Department of Education, Washington, DC

Graphic Design Services:
As part of planning and managing the first, second, third, and fourth annual Summits for 1,500 educators, practitioners, and administrators of state and local education agencies, our firm undertook the development and design of specific products related to the Summits.  Through working with staff from the Office of English Language Acquisition at the U.S. Department of Education, we designed the “Celebrate Our Rising Stars” logo to be used on the website for participant registration.  We then used the client approved logo and additional graphics to design all the materials related to the Summits which included the program agendas, technical compendiums of speaker biographies, compact discs, CD covers, fact sheets for marketing purposes, name badges, mailing labels, as well as nylon/cloth tote bags to be distributed to all participants.

Editing Services:
As part of the annual Summit on English Language Acquisition, our firm recorded and edited all of the yearly proceedings involving more than 50 sessions over a two and a half day period.  Our editors, in conjunction with speakers and presenters, ensured that our synopsis captured accurate, as well as salient information.  We considered the audience that would be receiving and reading the proceedings while editing the final versions of the proceedings to ensure the information would achieve its intended effect.  In addition, Barrera Associates staff carefully proofread all speaker and presenter notes in drafting versions leading up each final report.

Design, Development and Promotion of Safe Schools Website for Department of Defense Schools.

pic of web siteWebsite Design Services:
Under a subcontract with the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University, we developed several versions of the Department of Defense Education Activity’s graphic elements for a website.  After the client made the selection, we undertook a comprehensive project of graphically designing each page and section of the site.  As new products and documents were developed for inclusion in the website by outside consultants and partners such as the University of Hawaii and The George Washington University, our firm maintained responsibility for developing the appropriate graphical interfaces compatible with the website in its entirety.

Editing Services:
As new articles, research monograms, or other documents were developed by health experts for inclusion in the website, our editors ensured that these were comprehensively checked and proofread for grammar and correctness in usage, style, and tone before they were included in the archives or the different sections of the website.  Our staff was able to communicate with the authors electronically and had the ability to mark-up documents that indicated the progression of editing changes.

Please visit the Safe Schools Project website (site has moved to www.dodea.edu/dodsafeschools/) to view samples of activities and tasks undertaken for this project.

Barrera Associates provides ongoing support to the Institute for Education Policy Studies in the graphic design and production layout of a series of Monographs.  Students enrolled in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development’s education policy studies program have had, as one of their culminating activities, the preparation of a policy analysis paper. The students select topics that are the subject of current discussion and are key to improving education in the United States. As a result of the quality of the students’ work and the timeliness of the issues addressed, the education policy faculty publishes four of the best papers. This monograph is part of an occasional paper series highlighting policy analyses written by students.

Development of a Biennial Report to Congress on the Emergency Immigrant Education Program, Office of English Language Acquisition, U.S. Department of Education, Washington, DC

Under the aegis of the Elementary and Secondary Act, our staff developed the last three biennial Reports to Congress on this state formula grant program.  By aggregating and analyzing state reports containing financial enrollment and allowable activities, information was reviewed and corrected after communicating with the State Directors of Education.  Databases were compiled on overall program information and our staff provided analysis of the findings and results.  We developed a final report, which was carefully edited for grammar, word usage, and compliance with the data reported by each state.  A 200-300 page final report, complete with appendices, was prepared and graphically depicted for the client.
